My daughter has taken pre-cal as sophmore and is not a breeze atall.  She has only 2 more weeks in this quarter and is with a D. She is generally a A- student.

She is going to a private high school and I cannot afford tutoring at this point. The school does not seem to worry too much, since this is advanced course which only 6  or 7 students take.

I'm very worried that this grades will affect her college admissions if we don't do something. Talking to the teacher is not recommended both by teacher and my child and I don't know how to help him.

Re: sophomore grades
Unfortunately, many schools today have inflated the grades in order to pass students from grade to grade. Your child's A's may indeed have not been A's and this could be a reason for her struggling. It could also be due to poor teaching. I would look for an older student, former teacher or someone who could tutor her. It is worth the money to get her help now before she goes on to college or into the workforce. Inadequate instruction in math is a nationwide problem because children don't master arithmetic before being thrown into algebra, geometry or calculus. Talk to other parents as well. You may be very surprised at their responses.

Re: sophomore grades
I looked online and saw my son's first report card grades and he did very well. He goes three times a week for help in math and he recieved a 94 in geomerty. Very proud of his determination to be successful in his grades.

Re: sophomore grades
She can go for help to the teacher for a short time afterschool on certain days. I'm not sure if this is working due to car pool problems and pick up.
If this arrangemnet worked, I would not be seeing D in the course.

Re: sophomore grades
Can you explain what you mean by "talking to the teacher is not recommended both by teacher and my child?" Your daughter can't be the first or only student who has struggled in the class. If they can't ask the teacher for help, is there a resource room at her high school where all students can go for assistance? I understand where pre-calc may be advanced for sophomores, but surely there are some juniors and seniors who routinely take pre-calc....who do they go to for help? If your daughter can't approach that specific teacher, she ought to ask the math department chairperson/department head for advice.
