Now that the school year is over, how did your freshman this school year?  Did they like or hate high school?  Did they do well or not-so-well?    Was your school terrible or great?  Were any of your fears put to rest or did new ones arise?

My daughter started out scared to death to go to school.  The second day she couldn't wait to get there.  In her English class she came close to failing the first quarter, but she really buckled down the rest of the school year and did just fine in the class and her other ones.  She participated in sports and ROTC. College in on her mind as well as some career exploration.  She is very much looking forward to 10th grade.  She also got an eye opener into the realities of life--kids she knew being arrested, pregnancy, dropping out, drugs, suicide, car accidents, death, sex, sexual assault.  Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the school.

Just looking for some sharing of experiences.

Re: How Did Your Freshman Do?
My son's freshman year of high school was a period of adjustment. He's now in college, so I can look back with wisdom and experience....

A counselor had warned me that girls tend to have a tougher time in middle school, but boys experience more of the "jockeying for status and position" in freshman year of high school. Those who are smaller in stature, and "hit puberty" later, have a particularly tough time. Once my son found a few activities to get involved in, and he found some like-minded friends, everything improved. (He's not a "jock," but he ended up joining computer club and the drama tech crew, where they build sets and do sound/lighting for the school plays.)

My son's grades weren't up to his capabilities freshman year, either, but every year, they improved, and by the time he graduated he was on the honor roll and he was accepted to every college he applied to. As the counselor told me, universities like to see "an upward trend" in both grades (unless your child is "straight-A" to begin with) AND they like to see extracurricular activities and leadership roles taken on by the time a student is a Senior... Some kids try to "do it all" as Freshmen, and get "overwhelmed" but there's no need to do that...you've got time.
