Last night, after dark, an unusual thing happen.  I'd pulled into our garage, but heard the phone ringing in our house, so I didn't immediately close our garage door.  After completing the phone call, I went back to shut the door, and I saw a stranger (a teen male) next to my car in the garage...He was standing sideways, so I didn't see his face, but when I said, "Hey, what are you doing?" he turned and started to run down our driveway.  I started to follow him, and suddenly heard a bunch of glass breaking.

To make a long story short, we have an old refrigerator in our garage, where we keep soda pop plus some beer and wine, and the kid was trying to steal liquor.  A neighbor was out walking their dog, and urged me to call the police, because two other homes on my street also had strange things happen recently.

In one case, the family was sure they had closed their garage door, but they had a car parked in the driveway with the window down, and their garage door opener was inside the car.  Police theorize kid(s) used the opener to see if beer or anything else was stored in the garage.  In the second case, the outer door may have inadvertently been left open by a pre-teen, but it was an attached garage and the door into the house was also found ajar, although the family didn't think anything had been taken.  Bicycles, tools, etc. were untouched.

The policeman who took my report basically said that they are aware of similar situations, and so as a word of caution, keep your garage doors and cars locked, to reduce the chance of temptations to "bored kids" just looking for easy opportunities to get buzzed....

Re: Minimize Underage Drinking Temptations and Opportunities
Thanks, TJ....My husband jogs for exercise, and his foot isn't 100% yet, but he's been able to wear his regular dress shoes for work and stuff...Hopefully, in a few more days it'll be fully healed.

What shocked me the most was that it was just apparently a "single kid" by himself. I could almost understand the kind of "group mentality" if there were several teens walking down the street, just "egging each other on" to do stupid things, but this boy was the only one in sight....very surprising.

Wow! Thanks for sharing this story. That would have really freaked me out to find someone standing in my garage- not that I have one!! I get startled enough when the doorbell rings.

It's too bad your husband got injured because of this kid but it is a good warning for everyone. Teens using alcohol really scares me because they tend to not think their actions through and usually end up doing something stupid- like stealing from their neighbors. I hope your husband's foot is on the mend.

Re: Minimize Underage Drinking Temptations and Opportunities
Similar things have happened in our neighborhood - but since it was about 5 am, I would call it more planned than boredom. Simply put, we woke up because our dog was barking, which meant she did not know someone on our property. Kids were going through the neighborhoods looking for loose cash/change in unlocked cars. Thank goodness we keep our car doors locked. They weren't breaking anything - just looking for an easy buck. It is scary and frustrating when you think about it. We also keep drinks in our garage fridge and don't think anything about it. I will be more careful.

Re: Minimize Underage Drinking Temptations and Opportunities
While I'm fine and so are our cars/belongings, my husband ran outside without shoes after hearing me scream, and he stepped on a piece of the broken glass. Thankfully, it just appears to be a cut, and nothing imbedded in his foot, but this whole experience is one that I'd wish never happened....

Re: Minimize Underage Drinking Temptations and Opportunities
You're lucky, healthy, your car wasn't vandalized, as well, and that you're okay.

A couple of weeks ago, I forgot to close the garage door, and our neighbor across the street came over hours later to let us know the garage door was open. We were lucky nothing happened to my husband's car (I get the privilege of parking on the street).

I used to have a second fridge, which we kept in a covered area next to the house. It was great to be able to store extra drinks, especially during the summer time. Since remodeling, we no longer have the space for a second fridge.
