In the spirit of fairness, equity and professionalism what is the recourse when a teacher falsely accuses a student for misbehaving.  Grabs the students arm, commenting to "slap the student silly ... if they don't sit down and shut up", in front of the whole class.  Later to find they, the teacher had addressed (verbally and physically) the wrong student for the incident, and it was the student (my son) to point out the (other) student actually misbehaving and disrupting the class?  The teacher felt it was no big deal, and the school failed to call me until 2 days later, although my son advised me that same day at home.

Re: Teachers would falsely accuse students
I would go to the schoolboard, or anyone that I could get to listen!! The teacher made an obvious threat- "Going to slap you silly." Children should not fear their teachers, but shoudl have trust and faith in their teachers. I don't understand why someone would take the job of teaching if they don't have nerves of steel!! And something should be done since the student was practically humiliated in front of all his peers. Even an apology in front of all his classmates would have been suufice- just to admit that they were wrong and say they were sorry could have fixed the whole situation. Good luck with this!!

It's not about the skin color that you talk about,it's all about what was done to your child at school.this could have been another race or the same race teacher.I would not focus so much on white or black it really don't matter.it's all about your child was done wrong.

My son, 9th grade, told his therapist when asked if he ever thought about hurting another that he wouldn't mind seeing his French teacher dead. Well that opened a can of worms, he no longer goes to the school where everyone hates the French teacher which there is only one... no choices, and has had a difficult time adjusting because of being honest.

Personally I would demand a public apology in front of the class that the teacher committed this act. If he is denying it then I would go directly to the superintendent of the school and demand an investigation and that your child be moved to another class. No one has the right to put their hands on your son, even if he was causing a disruption. If he wasn't in a physical fight then there is no reason for anyone to put their hands on him unless it's you!

Re: Teachers would falsely accuse students
Dear Fatherhood,

I'm curious...is your son a student that might otherwise joke around with the teacher or other students? I just wonder if his previous behavior could have given the teacher reason to believe it was your son who was misbehaving? Or would you know this? I don't know your son but I know the scenario. Just a different angle kind of question. Sometimes when there are 43 students in a class, five periods a day, it is truly difficult to know who is misbehaving. However the comments you have quoted...not OK, not ever.

Also, if this teacher has made physical gestures at other students a 'paper trail' needs to be created. I suggest you meet with the principal, the teacher and your son. I would never meet without your child there. Even if the principal doesn't say anything, know the information is stored in the principal's head and in the teacher's professional file. Sometimes a school district wants to get rid of a teacher and they can't because there is no PAPER TRAIL. A meeting starts the PAPER TRAIL.

You can request to observe in the teacher's class and possibly one that your son isn't in. Sometimes getting perspective from the teacher's view can help you to understand, not agree, but just see the situation from another angle. Of course, everyone will probably be on their best behavior the day you observe but I wanted to arm you will a different idea.

It is good to see a dad on line and one who would choose Fatherhood as his identity.
