Re: What summer Jobs are available for 15 year old boys?
My son worked as a life guard when he was 15, 16 & 17. This job taught him to be a responsible young man. He took his job very seriously because people's lives were in his hands. He actually managed the pool for 2 summers, because the older guards were not as responsible as him.

Sorry if some of these have already been mentioned; life guard, golf caddy, lawn service, food service and working with younger children through your local recreation department.

Some Supermarkets hire baggers or cashiers. Check your state's minor work rules. Normally, they are very strict.

Lifeguarding is in my opinion the most lax and fun job in the summer.

I'll be starting my second year this summer, and can't wait. The sun, the water, my coworkers. But, certification is required

There are always summer camps that can offer programs for their community service hours and or CIT Programs at the city camps.

With certain job restrictions on amount of time they put in, I think 15 year olds can be hired. Try dining room service at ALF's or Nursing Home facilities . also, what used to be "bag boys" now known as "courtesy clerks" at grocery stores .

Also regarding farming, not knowing your area's laws, but in Oregon, at age 14, in order to operate a tractor, they must first take a tractor safety operator course. My son's friend, 15, just got hired last night by the same farmer my son works for.

Fast food services are good for seasonal hires, as well as parks & recreation services..Swimming Pools, Golf Courses.

How disappointing for the boys in your area! Here in Oregon, both of my sons started at 14. They both worked for the same farmer, but I know several farmers in our area that hire younger boys to work on the farms.

Re: What summer Jobs are available for 15 year old boys?
In our area (Boston Metropolitan) there isn't a farmer around that will hire a 15 year old and let them drive a tractor!!! In fact last year when I looked into farming opportunities for my 16 year old son the only thing I could find was volunteer type things. Most farmers around here want somebody 18 years or older handling heavy equipment.

Both of my sons have worked on farms. In order to drive tractors, they had to take and pass a tractor safety course. It is hard work, but they have made enough money to carry them through the school year, which frees them up considerably for schoolwork and social activities.

Re: What summer Jobs are available for 15 year old boys?
It is a sign of the state of our economy that even college age kids these days are struggling to find employment. I was blaming my daughter for her inability to find a job this summer when I was informed that my nephew and others were in the same bind. When I was in college there were plenty of jobs to be found around the college in labs and for professors. But these days those jobs seem to be going to graduate students or adults.

My kids (including my 14 year old who just started) work at our local movie theatre. Other friends of theirs work at the local ice cream place. My youngest will be a counselor in training in preparation for being a counselor the following year. Some kids I know are tour guides either in our town or in the city. My nephew worked at the ball park in his hometown selling drinks and snacks. Our area people also need yard help in the summer, so child i could try seeing if they could get a business going.

Hope he finds something he enjoys doing this summmer. Oh and there is always babysitting.

Re: What summer Jobs are available for 15 year old boys?
Hi Mayleng:

F15 year olds!! Mine, a girl, also wants to "hang out". Fine by me, but not the whole summer and not everyday.
My dd is an intern (year long) at a science museum-teaching program that is part of UC Berkeley. She has to volunteer 50 hours a year and then she is paid, $ 6. 75 an hour. In the summer she can work as a counselor in their science summer day camps ( 4 hours a day) and she will be a counselor at a week long ecology camp in the Santa Cruz mountains, for $ 140, with the same program. We are lucky, as we live relatively close to UC Berkeley.
Do you live anywhere near a U? If you do, check to see if the U has any teen programs, for internships. If you are in a metropolitan area, also check for places like the observatory, zoo, or aquarium, as these also often have intern programs for teens.
Yes, you can get a work permit to work at 15, but employers, if they can hire someone 16 or older (no permit needed) will not hire a younger teen. So, those jobs are hard to come by. If your son is a good swimmer, you should check to see if there are training sessions to become a life guard, over Spring break. One of my dd's friends is going to one of those classes over break. Then the suggestions for CIT is a good one, especially if you son does not have any experience in working with kids. He won't get paid, but will gain work experience and responsibility.
Finally, if you can splurge, the Y often has teen overnight camps, for HS kids only that are not expenisve. They do a great job in working with teens, in mentoring them and helping teens to set (and work on) goals. My oldest went to a HS week long camp with the Y and had a blast as well as gaining from all of the above.

Re: What summer Jobs are available for 15 year old boys?
Summer Camp Counselors and in some places Counselors In Training (CIT) are excellent positions to apply for. If it's through Park and Rec or another day care provider there will be weekly trips to theme parks, water parks, the beach or anything else you can imagine and as a counselor, he won't have to pay to get in.

Sleep away camp is another option, as he might decide to only work a couple of weeks but he'd be full time those weeks. And because the activities are nonstop, he'd hardly feel like he's missing out. Each year I write a bunch of recommendations for the kids I coach so they can go work for the "Y," Boy Scouts and other sleep away camps.

Have him talk to the teacher in charge of permits and work experience. They might even have a job board posted on campus somewhere. Camps are hiring this time of year, so it's an excellent time to be thinking about it.

Re: What summer Jobs are available for 15 year old boys?
Mayleng: Then a job as a summer camp counselor could be just the ticket. The teens & young adults I know really, really enjoy working with younger children -- its often fun and easy work.

It can also be part-time which leaves him open for time with friends. Just a thought.

Re: What summer Jobs are available for 15 year old boys?
Thanks TJ, yup he doesn't want to work this summer because he thinks he will be missing out of stuff. I want him to learn responsibility and that money doesn't grow on trees, that earning money requires hard work.

Re: What summer Jobs are available for 15 year old boys?
Hi Mayleng,

15 year olds are allowed to work, but he might need a work permit. When I was a teen I was able to get my work permits from my high school, so you could try checking there first.
Some summer jobs that come to mind are life guard, counselor at a summer day camp- check with your local YMCA or city parks and rec. If you could find something that allowed him to socialize while working, it might make having a job sound more fun and he wouldn't feel like he was missing out- if that's an issue.
