Re: reading program for my 7th grade son....
You are describing AR but not READ 180 as it is meant to be taught. My students really enjoy the program. It cannot be delivered adequately without a trained teacher and it isn't an online program

I have this program in my school and have personally seen students gain a grade level in a few months. It is very personalized; the students get one-on-one time with a teacher and change activities frequently on the computer. There is TONS of research supporting it.

You know what, I have not heard of 180 but my school does use Accelerated Reader, but with mixed results.

If you want your child to really enjoy and comprehend reading then here is what you do:

Choose some books that both of you might enjoy reading but that are challenging (Harry Potter, Golden Compass, Fudge, Fear Street, Goosebumps, Bridge to Tarabithea, Of Mice and Men, etc.). Then you buy 2 copies. Each day you decide on how many pages both of you are going to read seperately and then in the car or over dinner or while you are doing chores you discuss what you read. What did you like about it, was anything confusing, could it possibley represent something else, etc.

Not only will this increase reading comprehension, but it become a bonding activity that can be shared for the rest of your lives. To this day my dad and my baby sister and I are swapping books back and forth and looking for new authors that we can all get into. Books have become a true joy that we share.

Read 180 is from scholastic and I do not believe it can be done online as the person "teaching" this program must be trained to use it properly and it consists of 3 different stations of use.

Good luck to any child who uses this program.
