Is your child logging on? How do you set limits and protect them from internet predators or mature content?

What are your thoughts about elemtary school children (K-5) using the internet?

Re: Internet Safety.
I think it is great to let your child use the computer and help them gain some basic skills that never get out dated.
His school is pretty good about the Internet being used properly by kids and that is not a huge part of everyday class because most teachers know that by the time the lesson is over the information is out dated so they teach basic Internet skills and focus mainly on keyboarding.

My son has a few web sights he can use most are educational games, WWE, and a mid evil game he likes, He is limited to 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on behavior. He is not allowed to chat or accept friend request at all. He knows if he tries to access anything other than what I have in favorites for him he looses computer privileges. The computer is in a central part of the house so we check on him often.

I think you have to set rules depending on each kid. The rules change from year to year as he gets older and more responsible.

You're doing the right things, sbozarth23. My daughter's school has a computer teacher who has tech skills and previously was NOT a teacher. So there's a bit of back and forth, but even the parents don't know what they want. Some want keyboarding, others want things tied to the curriculum (and grade specific at that). Thankfully our computer teacher is up to the task and is willing to experiment with what is working and what is not to make the best experience possible.

Re: Internet Safety.
My husband and I had to take our son's technology education into our own hands since his school was not really up to the task. We are helping him learn the functions on the computer and how to use paint and access the games he likes to play. What we've done is create a user account that is just his and we have to enter the password before he uses the computer. Even then it's blocked the web with the exception of where we've allowed him to go and it's time locked to one hour. Technology changes so quickly, it's hard to keep up but we try to help him and ourselves stay main stream!

Re: Internet Safety.
I'm not a big elementary/Internet person, but then again I was a volunteer on a major service provider for years and know the dangers.

My daughter is allowed on a few websites (Club Penguin, Webkins, and with me on my Farmville account). She's only allowed to play with people she knows, and deletes any requests from others.

I'm not the biggest techno-push-type parent, because the reality is that the technology my son learned a dozen years ago in elementary school has all been replaced. Truthfully, they should not be afraid of technology, but I don't want to see them spending too much time learning stuff that's outdated soon after anyway.
