My child's school sent out a note (just to get an idea) if parents were interested in getting their child vaccinated for the H1N1 at the school if it becomes available.  I for one, would get my child vaccinated.  I caught the swine flu this last July, it was rough, I had all the symptoms and ultimately ended up with bronchitis at the end which is when I decided to go to the doctor.  But I survived it.  However I wouldn't want my child or anybody for that matter to go through what I went through.  I was wondering what are your thoughts on the matter.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
Like I said in a previous post, it's important for each of us to do our own research and remember that we can only make decisions that are right for our own families. The choice of whether or not to vaccinate is extremely personal and the topic can elicit very emotional responses. For that reason we're going to close this thread to future posts.

Please be an informed consumer and consult your child's pediatrician or health care provider to get the facts.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
47,000 people died because Vioxx was on the market and CDC refused to pull it, within just four years. The FDA fast tracked the vaccination H1N1 Nasal mist vaccine with out the ten week test trail faze. It was fast tracked with in a few weeks time. 35000 or more people have reactions to vaccines yearly which means in 5 years we have 175000 people with vaccine injuries, these FACTS can be found at VAERS.gov. The CDC stated we were in a pandemic back in August, when in fact we weren't. the numbers the CDC comes out with changes daily if you listen to the reports. Look at NY nurses vs health department. Nurses are coming out and finding out whats happening and are against alot of what they are seeing. Once they started educating themselves about vaccines they are now in a movement, one thats called choice. Autism is a vaccine injury, there is a link between the both vaccines and genetics. Nurses and Doctors have had no clue, now that they are educating themselves their eyes are opened wide. I highly recommend you educated before vaccinations and medication. PLEASE read the inserts of any package and look at the reactions, the precaustions and safety measures gives most of the data needed. The Government has signed a bill into law that protects makers and government from being sued because of vaccine injury and pharmasuetical products. Neurological issues, Gillian Barre syndrome, Lupus, head aches, weight gain, death. Look at the babies that have died because they receieve the flu shot! We are the sickest country in the world and every country knows this and has stated its because of the over use of vaccines. We have the highest infant mortality rate in the developed countries.
We are in a time period where we need to access the risks for our own bodies because no one else is going to do it. Read the package inserts and then make an informed decision. Havent you ever read the package insert for any drug or vaccination before? Haven't you informed your patient of the risks prior to vaccination? If you havent then maybe you need to inform your patient of the real risks before giving them any shot. I now have fibromyalgia due to the vaccination I was given with out consent. With in three weeks after recieving a vaccine I became ill.
And you stated that live virus's do not transmit, well doctors tell me differnt. Look at Gardasil, how many girls are now injured because they were vaccinated, look at how many have died, look at the number that contracted HPV due to the Vaccine. Researchers that made the vaccine have told USA to stop pushing it so hard. look at the kids with enviromental cancers.
As for the internet and some of the information, I have three children, two older children and then a young one. My older children had maximum of 5 vaccines, my youngest 20 before 2 yrs. My youngest is sick all the time, my grand children, two are vaccinated and very sickly, the one that isn't, very healthy and on target with development. The information is out there, if the CDC website is scary then I guess we shouldn't be reading it, most of the information is on that site.

I don't understand the logic of the live vaccine infecting more people. Chicken pox vaccine is also a live vaccine but we don't see a spread of the chicken pox virus from vaccinated people. As a health care professional in a huge hospital system, I yet to have heard any professionals who are concerned over the live virus usage causing a pandemic. We attend multiple information meetings for H1N1 and this has never been brought up.

As for one who had the H1N1 is was not very mild at all. Does mild means no hospitalization? Our mild flu took over 7 days of illness and our lungs are still not 100%. It has caused a temporary asthma and our breathing is still only about 75%. This is after 3 weeks. As of now I personally know of 2 people on ventilators due to virus. Both have no underlying medical issues.
Unfortunately with google there is alot of information out there but you really have to use your best judgment when filtering through it. I would trust a CDC website before a blog on scary vaccines.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
I do agree that if you get the N1H1 vaccination you need to get as much information as you can about it .
You should be sure to check on if you could in any way shape or form spread it to others .
Some people may be unable to get vaccinated due to other health issues or allergies . Nobody wants to make another person sick .
What I really suggest is if you feel the least bit sick stay at home . I am not sure why but for some reason alot of people who feel sick with flu like symptoms still go out to work or shopping at the store . These are two great places to spread it . People who are not sick also need to take precautions .
At work if you use any shared items wipe them down before you touch them . I went to my sons school to make copies and yes before I made 1 copy I wiped the machine down and cleaned my hands when I was done .
Take a small pack of sanitizer wipes out with you .
Wipe down the cart you use at the grocery store .
I never use a pen that has come from any place but my pocket book . I use hand sanitizer a lot when I am out and can not wash my hands .I also do not hug or shake hands with others ( except my kids ) I may look crazy cleaning my cart and credit card machine at the grocery store but up until a few weeks ago I not had symptoms of the flu since I was around 12 and I am now 34 . When I get sick instead of running out to get anti viral I stay home drink warm tea and oj to load up on C and zinc . Just like I did as a kid and back then I do not remember the CDC having a flu epidemic every year like we do now .

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
Dear marcsdad -
If your son's pediatrician told anyone that ANY shot was "mandatory" or even implied it, you should find yourself a new pediatrician! No one can force any type of medication or treatment on you. Fortunately we live in the US, where we have choices about these things. (At least until the new healthcare bill gets passed.)

To ParentAdvocate:
This week on the show "The Doctors", there was a special show dealing with H1N1 and they interviewed the experts and doctors that worked for the CDC. The doctor from CDC said you absolutely do not get sick from getting the vaccine nor can you become contagious. There were so many questions that they dealt with and answered, you can go to the website and google "The Doctors" and see all the information about the show and what the Dr. Anne Schuchat, Assistant Surgeon General of the United States and director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases has to say.
To Crissleigh:
I will as well as my family start using the gargling with salt water, keeping the nose clean and everything that you posted.
Thank you for your post.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
If your going to get the shots PLEASE ask to see the insert or product information and STAY AWAY from others. People are dying from reactions.Flumist and Fluzone are live viruses which means YOU can GIVE the flu TO others around you for 21 days. A live virus can create a pandemic. The actual H1N1 is very mild, most people that have immune complications are those that are getting pneuommia. Getting Vitamin D, B and plenty of fluids also helps. Doctors are actually concerned over the live virus usage as they know this will cause a pandemic, so please stay away from others, use good hygene such as tissue, coughing in your sleeve if you need, keeping hands away from face, frequent hand washing. Using good hygene will help stop the spread of the illness.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
My husband and I were sick about 2 weeks ago with symptoms of it but have not confirmed any of my family had it at the doctor . So for now we are taking a preventative stance . I will share tips that came to my email this is what we are doing
Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know..

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (these are the neti pots you buy very cheaply at Walmart and are very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (such as citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
Delicate topic. There's so much going on out there with this H1N1 virus. Such as government conspiracy on how it came to be. Times have changed, our life as americans have changed. We can no longer trust to be safe anymore. We've been through alot since 911. Our own government sometimes we question. My heart goes out to everyone. Let just pray that we survive anything that comes our way! Nope, not big on the vaccine and that's just out of my own research. Wish you all goodluck in whatever decision you all make.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
This has been a big issue in our area and I am still undecided . Before I can make a decision I would need to do more research .
I have a 3 year old and I would hate for her to get ill and possibly have complications that could have been prevented.
I also have a 10 year old son and more often than not by the time the shots are ready he has already had it been over it . He also about a week ago had head aches that made him want to cry , vomited ,and complained of aches and pains all over . We were advised to keep him in unless we could not get his fever down due to if he has swine flu he could spread it or contract it if he did not .
His school has had as many 16 to 20 students absent at a time all with the same thing .This is a lot of kids with only 75 students school wide.
For my son I figure it is to late and we are undecided with our daughter .

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
My husband and I are still debating whether to give our 9 year old the H1N1 vaccination yet. At first I was planning on getting the vacation myself, (I work in a homeless shelter and each winter will bring exposure to any and all flues and colds going around) but over the summer, about 1/3 of our residents had H1N1 (confirmed by the health department). Each was given Tama flue and was better within a week. A few of my coworkers got sick and better very fast. The rest of us used a gallon of hand sanitizer a day, kept fans on in our office to clericalist air, washed down desks, pens, phones and anything a client touched and we did not get sick. I have decided not to get the vaccination for myself.
I wonder- if this flu is new and may be around for years to come, why not get our kids (the health ones only) exposed to it now, have them build up a tolerance to it.
My daughter has a mini hand sanitizer bottle on her back pack, lunch box and the zipper of her jacket. We are planning on giving her teacher a bunch of the hand pump bottles of hand sanitizer for the classroom. Anything to keep H1N1, the normal flu, all the winter clods and any other nasty germs away from our daughter now, and when the H1N1 vaccination is ready, we hopefully have made up our minds.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
Our family just got over being sick. It was not the H1N1 virus (there was a test done). It was really ruff. I watched my 39 year old husband who is never sick go from being slightly ill to extremely ill resulting in full fledged pnemonia. He has never been that ill in his life. My eight year old son got hit next and followed the same path as my husband. We stopped it before it turned into pnemonia.

You better believe we are getting the H1N1 vaccine as soon as we are all healthy enough to do it. If you are wondering if you have already been exposed to it I think you can ask your doctor for a blood test which should show some antibodies or something like that.

Befre my husband took ill, I was leaning towards skipping the vaccine. Not now.

Please don't give your child aspirin! That can cause Reye's Syndrome. Give them Tylenol or some other fever reducer.

Just a thought: if you had the swine flu this summer wouldn't your child have been exposed to it and perhaps already have some immunity built up? Might be worth asking your doctor about that.

No, there is not enough study regarding this H1N1 shot. Now that flu season is appon us, we make sure we act quickly when our kids are not feeling well; Mortron, asprian, etc. Fevers lasting longer than a day, you take your kid to urgent care. We have to be more pro active when our kids are under the weather.

I've moderated these boards long enough to know that any thread on vaccines brings up strong feelings on both sides. As with many choices we as parents have to make for our children, the choice to vaccinate or not is extremely personal. The best thing is to do the research on both sides and then make an informed decision that is right for our own families. I was one the fence before I researched and I don't mind sharing that my family will get vaccinated, but that is what feels right for us.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
After reading these posts, especially hockeymum's post, I believe my son had a very mild case of swine flu last week. He complained of a headache, which he described felt like a migraine, fatigue and aches. As soon as we got home, I took his temperature, and sure enough, he had a high fever.

I kept him home the next day, and gave him Motrin for the headache and fever, which helped him. He's fine now, thank goodness.

I'm wary of getting the H1N1 virus flu shot for me and my family, only because I don't think enough testing has been done. I've already received a regular flu shot, and I'll have my son receive a regular flu shot at his next doctor's appointment.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
One poster keeps stating that Flumist is a live vaccine, yet do not forgot that the chicken pox vaccine is also a live vaccine. And when a child gets a chicken pox vaccine they are not spreading the disease around and infecting others. FluMist is a weakened live virus vaccine. That means it is made from a live virus that has been designed not to cause the flu.
As a parent who has already had the H1N1 infection in her own family, in my personal experience I would recommend getting the vaccine especially if the child has any underlying medical issues ex. Asthma.
At my daughters school just in her grade at least 15 of her friends came down with the flu (which she passed to her sister and myself). The school made no attempt to warn parents that this illness was going around. If your child shows any symptoms I would keep at home immediately. For us it started with neck pain and severe headache with mild fever before the respiratory illness kicked in. I actually thought I was having a migraine instead of the flu at first.
Here are the symptoms:
Almost always:
Cough and fever
Common:
Fatigue
Muscle aches
Sore throat
Headache
Decreased appetite
Runny nose
Sometimes:
Nausea
Vomitting
Diarrhea
While for my youngest duaghter and myself it was a mild version of the flu, if you have any underlying medical conditions (for example asthma- like my daughter) it was very, very harsh on the lungs and she needed medical treatment to help with her breathing. We were ill for about 10 days and are still having mild respiratory coughing.
It was reported in todays paper where I live that 99% of respiratory illness were testing positive for H1N1 in our Province.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
Frances states "Children that are not up to date with them are a danger to all other children" I need to ask who is the real danger, the child that is carrying a live virus around or a child that has a healthy immune system.
In a school with 300 children, 1 child gets flumist, the child is contagious for 21 days. Now the other 299 children are all healthy and can fight off anything that is sent their way. With in a week we see children coming down ill with the sysmtons fo the flu. Where did these children get the flu from? Who infected who? Not one child was sick and the only child with anything remotely close to the flu was that one child. Whos the danger? The word contagious means that the child can trasmit to others what they have. The word 'live' means its live and this child now has become the carrier. Many children today have complications with the immune system. This one child comes in because the parent is doing what they believe is right, or what they are told is right. They transmit this virus to those with weak immune systems and the child with the immune problem contracts it and dies. WHOS FAULT IS IT??? Please educate before you vaccinate

This Dad enrolled his child in a local trial for the H1N1 vaccine that is going on in the Denver, CO area... he got a lot of information out of them before he withdrew his son and didn't
let them inject him (he's so gutsy!).

He wrote an article about it

I firmly believe in vaccinations for children, my children are all up to date with them. Children that are not up to date with them are a danger to all other children. I personally am scared to death of the H1NI flu
and my children will be getting vaccinated for that as well when it becomes available to them. I'm not taking any chances with them getting that.

Wow, this is very interesting. I appreciate everyone's feedback. I guess the best thing to do if you have a child with an underlying condition such as asthma, it would be best to check with your pediatrician as well as the internet and see if getting the H1N1 is safe. I heard that this type of flu can be fatal for those with underlying conditions.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
Parents that are uninformed think everything is mandatory but what they dont realize is they have rights. Your child has rights also and you have the right to protect them. The government signed into law that no one can sue a pharmasuetical company anymore for deaths, nor the government. We are suppose to ask about the vaccine before giving it to our children. We are suppose to research the product our selves then agree or disagree. Most of the vaccines have a precautionary statement and a safety statement, this statement tells you about whether the vaccine is live or dead, what studies they have done if any, what reactions are and so on. Most people dont realize that those who have never had the flu shot dont get the flu, why, we have our own resistance to the virus its self. We have built up natural immunities. I have older children and they had chicken pox, very few children if ever died from them, we use to have chicken pox parties where if one person had it we all took our kids there, this way they built up their own immunity to them. Same with Mumps, I remember my brother having the mumps, we picked on him terrible, but he survived! Boys are more prone to mumps than girls. Pharmas and Government have an interest in health care its called "money". Its aTrillion dollar business and we are the guiniea pigs for them. Garadsil has taken so may young girls lives, more than the H1N1 and yet we havent pulled that off the market. Gardasil does not prevent any girl from getting HPV, and HPV is not all that horrible. HPV rarely shows its ugly head, and when it does its usally goes away quickly too.
There is only one thing I can say and thats start researching before giving your kids this junk. We are a sick nation because of all the junk we are putting into our systems. Do you not think that a HEP B shot doesnt have HEP B in it? They recently found that HEP b is a good candidate for the cause of autism.
Start researching vaccines!! You'd be amazed at what you find out!!

NOOOOOOOO.
First of all flumist is a LIVE vaccine, this will infect every child that comes in contact with the child thats been vaccinated.
Secondly this virus is so mild that the regular flu is worse.
These vaccines have not been tested at all and some are having serious reactions from the regular vaccine. Please check out, Vaccine adverse event reporting system, check out the many deaths from just the vaccines..
If I had known what I know today, no my children would never had been vaccinated.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
I am all for making sure my children are up to date with their vaccinations. However, this being a new vaccination I have a few concerns as to what negative effects it may have. I am a bit confused, since I have been hearing on the news and from doctors on television who oppose the idea of giving the H1N1 vaccination to children. I heard today on "Good Morning America" that the CDC reported that six children in Texas have died from the H1N1 Swine Flu. I am definitely considering getting my children the new vaccine when it becomes available here in Valencia unless I hear otherwise.

Re: Would you have your child get the H1N1 vaccination when it becomes available?
My son and his dad went to the doctor's for his boosters (sixth grader), the doctor told his father that it was 'mandatory' so he said nothing. My son hasn't had any problems thus far (it's been two weeks) but I would have questioned it. I am not a big fan of 'new' vaccines for my children. I prefer home remedies and being proactive and good hygiene and nutrition. My son has been sick only one time in three years and that was last winter with a throat infection.
