I guess I will try to bring it up at PTO meeting as well as summer enrichment programs that had been popping in school districts all around us but not ours of course..

I can tell you that an immersion program is probably going to be viewed favorably in an attendance area with many native speakers of a particular language. The district will see it primarily as a way to bring children up to speed in ENGLISH, with the foreign language for English speakers as a benevolent side affect.

So if you're interested in such a program, look at the immigrant population in your area to see what language would likely be offered.

The irony is that the English speaking PTA moms are likely to be the driving force in proposing and maintaining such a program. Immigrants, for various reasons, tend to hold back from strong involvement in schools. Start bringing it up at PTA meetings, get a committee together to lobby the district.

Sounds like you already know more than I do about which schools offer what already.

Thank you for your replies.
Well, I heard that D25 is adding Chinese in 4th grade. I heard that one of Glenview districts offers choice of Spanish and/or Chinese from 1st grade. I heard that Deerfield is adding Spanish and extending hours. I know VH (and I think Des Plaines) used to have Spanish immersion programs available.
My questions - how school districts make those decisions and I guess I wonder which school districts are offering programs in case I am interested to move in Nortwest suburbs or brining it up with our school district.

I was going to ask the same kinds of questions as drjohnson. Also, which foreign language are you seeking? I know there's a private Japanese Futabaki School in Arlington Heights, and I found a Chicago Public Schools News Release that said the following Chicago public elementary schools offer Chinese:
• Alcott Elementary School • Bell Elementary School • Canter Middle School • Columbia Explorers Academy • Disney Magnet School • Evergreen Middle School • Healy Elementary School • Jackson Language Academy • LaSalle Language Academy • Madero Middle School • McCormick Elementary School • McKinley Park Elementary School • Oriole Park Elementary School • Perez Elementary School • Pershing East Magnet School EL • Skinner Elementary School • Smyth Elementary School • Turner Drew Language Academy • George Washington Elementary School • Williams Multiplex

Chicagoland is a huge area. The city itself has hundreds of schools, and then there are suburbs that vary greatly in their character and distance from the city. Can you narrow it down a bit?

Plus, there are schools with Two-Way Immersion programs in foreign language, others with traditional language instruction that may start at varied grade levels, usually middle school. Also, there are private schools which have various offerings including a French language/cultural school with all subjects taught in French.

I doubt if anyone has compiled a comprehensive list. Can you explain more closely what you're looking for?
