I think like many other parents have mentioned, story-time is a good ice-breaker. He/She will in turn become interested and eventually want to know more.
Not just that, but story-time is structured for children within their age bracket. They will be exposed to children their age therefore they can relate.

There are many children's books about the first day of school. This time of year, I find many places that offer story time are using these types of books to help children get ready. You might check your local library or bookstore to see if a back to school story time is on the agenda.

No matter how apprehensive you are about your child starting school, try to remain positive about all of the fun (s)he will have and all of the great things they will be learning. If your son/daughter knows any of the children that will be in their class, play that up too. Do your best to help them realize what a big boy or girl they are now that they get to start school. This is a major milestone for your child.

As a parent, it is frightening to send your child to school for the first time. If the child picks up on your fears, theirs might grow. Think how much easier it will be to drop off a child for the first day of school if they are excited to go than if they are afraid. Good luck and stay positive.

My child is going to school for the first time this year and I am also scared. I work right across the school that my child is going to. Just think it the way I do school only has your child for 8 hours and then you get them. They will always be yours. They need to meet new people and learn things at parents can't teach them. So enjoy the time that they are at school, that your mind off of it and clean house or go out until school is over.

Is your child excited? I suggest telling him stories about when you were in school..... and how different AND exciting it's going to be. Also, tell him WHY he's going to school, that he will make friends, meet the nurse and principal. Check to see if your school has tours before the first day. To help you... if you can volunteer, keep yourself busy. Before you know it it will be time for him to come home.
