We will be moving soon and I am investigating schools for my family.  One school that I am pursuing has a 1st/2nd combination class, and a 2nd/3rd combination class.  What are your thoughts on this?

Re: combination classes
I just found out that my son will be in a 1st/2nd combination class (he is a 2nd grader this year).
Does this mean he is not doing well in school that why teacher put him in a lower class level?
I'm so frustrated his 1st grade teach told me during parents/teacher meeting that he is one of the best student in his class.
Please give me some feedback what I should do now.

Thanks,
Kathy

Re: combination classes
Wonderful suggestions and resources from all, particularly Lockmama's points about the importance of working independently. As a former "combo" teacher now parent of a child who was in a combo class I see both sides of the discussion. Teachers are asked to deliver two grade levels of curriculum, essentially taking on the responsibility of two teachers. The collection of children in each classroom is the sole factor in making these classes work. Children are grouped in a variety of ways, often with above average younger children and average to below average older children in an effort to create a more homogeneous group. Great in theory, but as the year progresses the younger students often overtake their older peers academically, and you can imagine the angst that ensues. The most beneficial grouping I have seen is when two groups of above average, independent workers come together.

Re: combination classes
i think combination classes are wonderful assuming that they are allowing children to develop at their own pace within that setting. it gives children time for true mastery of skills. it also gives children both that moment of being "the younger" and needed helping and that moment of being "the older" with a responsibility to help others. both roles give children such a great opportunity to learn and grow themselves in ways that wouldn't be appropriate in a single grade classroom setting.
ultimately, of course, it only matters what the classroom your child will be in is like and not how that environment 'should' be in theory. hope it turns out to be wonderful for you!

Re: combination classes
I went to a private school as a child where that was the case because otherwise the classes would have been to small. It worked out fine where I went. As an example, there was only 7 of us in our graduating class. We had grades 9-12 in one classromm with maybe only 20 students. I'm sure it depends on the school and how many students there are and how the school handles that.

Re: combination classes
Hi goingtohawaii and welcome to GreatSchools (and definitely good with the move!).

We've had numerous conversations on "split" classrooms including one here: community.greatschools.net/q-and-a/239414/Help-My-dughter-was-put-in-a-23-split-class-this-year-and-Im-not-sure-about-this-?cpage=1#comment_262007

Depending on what level your child is at, and how much autonomy your child can work at (and how advanced he or she is), they're an option.

But if a teacher is teaching to two groups of students all day, it can be a challenge to give adequate attention to the two grades. If you're concerned, visit the school and ask to observe the classroom to see if it is something you can live with.
