Re: my child's math grades
You may want to check in with your local library they normally have some high school kids that help middle grade students with their home work.

If your son is using the Nelson math text book, they have online exercises for each chapter so he could get extra practice there and perhaps get a chapter ahead so he would be more familiar with the material. www.mathk8.nelson.com/companion.html
If he is still having problems with basic math, I would highly recommend checking out www.teachallkids.com for ideas.
Good luck.

I used some technology to make it fun for my daughter to learn her basic math facts. Whenever we are in the car, I hand her my phon and she practices her math on a program called iBob Math Quizzer Level 1.

I got it on iTunes for 99 cents -- see this site for more information:

Does your school offer tutoring? If not, are there older children in your neighborhood that could offer assistance? Sometimes, kids feel more comfortable when an older child can help out.

Re: my child's math grades
I am not sure where you live but there are a lot of tutoring (group or individual ones) available that you may want to try. We are trying two of them this summer to see which one works for my son. My son is 2nd grade and he is very very slow in adding and subtracting on timed test.

We are paying $15- $18 per one hour class in a group sitting.

You may want to try one of the learning center and get an assessment done if you don't know which area your child needs. After the assessment, you can hire individual tutor (college student, school teachers, etc.) or use the learning center program (more expensive).
