My son goes to private school now, but I'm considering him to take a test for the gifted program in Bellevue, WA because he is one of the top in his class. I heared that gifted program makes students study a lot, so it could stresses my child. Also, if my son falls behind other kids in the gifted program, it may hurt his feeling. If anone has gifted program experience, please give me a advice.

Re: Does the gifted progrm elementary school give a lot of stress to the students?
My son was in a gifted program at his school from elementary through junior high and loved every minute of it. He was able to expand his knowlege and keep him interested in learning. His favorite day of school was the day of GATES. He was bored, for the most part, of his regular classes. It was no problem for him to make up any work from the regular class. The teachers were great as to keeping him up to date. He also attended a gifted program at McNeese State University called "Governor's Program for Gifted Children" for 7 weeks out of the summer and that experience truly helped him. But to enter that program, the child has to be going into the 6th grade, at least. He is now going into the 10th grade and is doing great. I really encourage you to look into programs like that for gifted children.

My daughter just completed her first year in the gifted program. She is going into the 4th grade. We had an amazing experience with it. The program included a lot of hands on projects and experiments. She was able to have art class there which meant she attended art 2 times a week verses one in her regular school. We love the differentiation the programs offer meeting the needs of all of the children. We never had homework and the elementary school's policy was to excuse work they missed on the gifted program days.I hope you have a positive experience with it! We love it!

My son is in a gifted program in a public school. He enjoys it, but does get a little anxious because he gets pulled out of his "regular" class to go to the GATE class. He feels like he is missing something important in class and he then has to make up any work he missed while in GATE. It is usually not much and he can bring it home, but he does get anxious about it.

We live in Georgia, and both of my children are in the Gifted Program. My older daughter is in the 7th grade and my younger daughter is in the 3rd grade. They are both at the top of their classes. They have been in the Program since they started school. I guess it depends on the child since each one learns at their own pace. You should discuss your concerns with the school. Work with them to find the best experience for your child. My girls have challenges and sometimes don't do as well as they think they should. I just let them know that as long as they do their best, then I am proud. I do know that if they were not in the Gifted Program they would be bored with school, and that causes a whole new set of problems. Weigh your options and talk with your son, so you know how he feels about the new challenge. Hope this helps.

I agree with the first two postings. I have two in a magnet school and are also in the gifted program. The way the program works with our school is that they go deeper into their studies and they create an atomsphere for the children to think "out of the box". They are getting a complete full rounded education. I would recommend getting him tested and if you still are concern with the putting him in the program, talk to the teachers in the program and get their input as to what the exceptations are for the children. You may be amazed that what you are expecting is not the case.
