This summer for those of us in LAUSD schools there has been very little on offer particularly for those with low budgets or no income at all. Working in your local community to develop a program can be useful if you find the right people to support you. We developed a summer enrichment program at our local library using a mixture of their community room and children's library space. I volunteer at the library especially the children's section and support them by promoting the fantastic reading scheme and they help the children choose and find books whilst our program develops the child's literacy skills over the summer. Helping them to write book reviews or keep a journal of the activities they have done over the summer break. Children who do not like to read can be encouraged to draw a picture in their journal or cur out pictures from out magazines that covers the theme or activity for the day. As the journal becomes more full children begin to feel proud of their work and then want to run to it everyday to complete. Remember parents this is their journal so don't be tempted to do it for them.

By the time the return or start school in the Fall they will be able to re count all the wonderful things they did over the summer months.

Parents are now coming to our summer enrichment program for ideas of things they can do in the community or home to build their child's personal and social skills within the home.
