As a teacher of 20 years with two children of my own, I can tell you that each child matures differently.  Who knows? If you have spoken to the school regarding this problem and there are no problems within the school classroom, I would advise you to just really try to get your child excited about first grade.  Every child is different.  They need time to adapt to new situations, and the school should be helping you with this.  If children find school to be an interesting and enjoyable situation they will not usually hesitate to leave mom for long.  Good luck. Re: Advice to mom of Kindergarten child having difficulty acclimating
I had a student one year who sounds similar to your son. His kindergarten teacher and I felt this student could catch up with peers if given another year of kindergarten. His mother agreed. The end of the next year, he scored in the top 10% of his class in math and reading, which meant he would no longer need my classroom (for students with the highest needs).
I also held my own child back in another year of preschool. This has helped tremendously in all academic areas and self-esteem. No longer struggling to keep up!
Good luck to you and your son; keep giving that extra support so he doesn't lose ground. It pays off!

If your child is having difficulty getting adjusted, find out why. There can be many reasons as to why your child, doesnt want to go. As a parent, I go through this yearly, this last year we started out but we ended up really liking school. The teacher and my child hit it off. Children feed of off emotions. We have a male teacher for a male child and it works wonderfully.
