My daughter has adhd and is ld and doesn't qualify to be in special education.  Currently she goes to an alternative school but she will be going to high school next year and she will need extra help in all of her subjects.  So I am wondering where can I go to get the extra help she will need?

testing
SpEd law says that anyone one can request testing. Put it in writing. If your child is ADHA- get a dr note saying so and attach to request. Be specific about what testing is for. Behavior? Comprehension? Writing?

I did get her tested through the school she doesn't qualify but I forgot to mention she did get outside testing and when I went over it I did notice they recommend an IEP. So I told her counselor and she is going to talk to the person that is over the special ed department. Thank you

My younger son has ADHD and is LD too. I can only say that it's unusual for high schools to have supportive programs in place but you might call ahead and talk to the guidance counselor to ask about what supports might be in place. If you find there to be none which is what I found - you might find you're a better source of support than any the school might have.
You can ask for an extra copy of her textbooks to keep at home - they might say no the first time you ask and if they say no everytime, it's possible to buy used copies of the textbooks fairly cheaply. Even without the textbooks, you really can help in every subject but math - and if you're good in math, you can help there too.
All it takes is time and patience and on your daughter's part - the willingness to let you help. Two heads are better than one is the old saying that applies here. You can help write papers, you can likely type better than can she, the whole homework process goes faster - if she'll let you help.
I find even paid professional tutors can't do as good as job as can a parent - tutors watch the clock. There are secrets to the subjects that are history, social studies and English - post back if you find yourself helping and you want those secrets that really will help you to help her be successful in high school.

Re: adhd and learning disability
my son is going into 5th grade and he is ADHD/ODD and he just now got a 504 which is for ppl who dont qualify for the IEP.
Just keep on them and dont forget that YOU are her advocate and you have to make them act when they dont want to.

Good Luck!@

Re: adhd and learning disability
In regards to doctors note, there are also non-profits who will do testing and evaluation of your child. They are child advocates (psychologists/educational specialists) who will develop plans that are specific to help your child. In addition, there are sometimes IEP (individual education plan) specialists on staff who will advocate for your child with the school district. Its important to do some research to find an agency or non-profit that will offer a full service. For example, in the San Francisco area, there is Morrissey/Compton Education Center
www.morrissey-compton.org/index.html
which will tailor a specific plan for your child and also work with the schools on Individual Educational Plans. When you find a "doctor" be sure they offer this type of service - evaluation, advocacy, tutoring. It works wonders in many case.

Re: adhd and learning disability
How old is the outside testing that was performed? When was the testing performed by the school in which she was found inelligible for special education?

I would also like to invite you to join and post that the "Learning and Attention Difficulties" Group here at Great Schools: community.greatschools.net/groups/11554

There you will find parents who have shared experiences and can provide you with additional resources.

Re: adhd and learning disability
Why does she not quilify? My experience with the public school is that you really have to push. If it has been a while since she has been tested, demand that she be tested again. Write down anything and everthing that you see happening with her. Do not give up. My youngest has ADHD and a reading disability. I fought and fought for over 4 years to get my child the help he needed and I still fight everyday for him to have the services that he deserves. If you know your child has difficulties do whatever you need to to get the services. It is her right to get the best possible education that she can get. Don't let schools bully you, you have those rights. You are your child's advocate. A sqeeky wheel gets oiled. Best of Luck, I know it is very hard, but when it comes to your kids if you have to, you have to go in with both arms swinging (Not literaly, I just mean you have to give it everything you have.)

Hi melanie, did you mean www.famhelpingfam.org/ ? The link you gave seems to go to a Disney magazine. :)
