As a tutor for over seven years I have had a few students who were amblivant about learning to read or wanting to become better readers. One of the reasons for this is they lack confidence in their abilities to read and they see their peers being more successful then they are . So they are disinterested and want to give up. When a student comes to me. I like to find out what interests they haveand where the student is struggling and tailor a lessonplan for that student.Since each child is unique in how they learn some my learn in a more visual context while others may learn in a more sensory way. Whatever their learning style is I then have activites that the student would enjoy whether it is painting, use play- doh ,spelling words in the sand,or board games that practice the concept they are struggling with will not only make reading fun but motivate them and spark their interest in reading. I have a real heart and passion for helping students become excellent readers. Older students are interested in playing scrabble Jumble or using the computer to help them increase their reading and thie fluency. I hope this helps!!
