Re: MY SON WILL START HIGH SCHOOL THIS YEAR. HE HAS AN I.E.P.
I.E.P's provide help for all sorts of learning issues. You will have a meeting with the school to decide what will help your student succeed. You can always add or take away services as new challenges arise or goals are met.
My son's have had I.E.P.'s since 3rd grade and now they are a sophomore in H.S., and 8th grade. My boys are provided extended time on tests, a quiet study hall, as well as, a special ed teacher on consult for extra support on an as need basis. Having an I.E.P. doesn't mean your student is not smart, so don't freak out with the IEP. Both of my sons have gifted/superior IQ's (135 and 122 IQ's). They are also L.D. My boys are successful students with the help their I.E.P's. Both take honor's classes. When they were young, their gift- LD gap was extreme and it took years to close the gap on many of their problems in school. I know many extremely bright and gifted students that have won national awards and contests...and have I.E.P's! I hope this helps.
