Building a Star...
Building a Star Wars X-Wing

Our son seemed interested in space (moon, planets) at a young age as was I. I remember flying model rockets when I was a kid--nothing is more satisfying that the noise, smell, and rush of the launch.

We have been flying rockets since he was two and we have discussed thrust (what makes the rocket go up), gravity (what makes the rocket come down), friction, energy, and many other things that I didn't get to until much later in life. He knows the names of the rockets, and which missions they flew. In the case of Apollo, he knows who walked on the moon first.

Cass now proclaims himself a scientist and is interested not only in space flight, but earth sciences as well. There are a number of his experiments percolating in our workshop as I write this.

Science is leading the way for our human race, but americans seem to be turning away from the subject.

Model rockets are fairly inexpensive to get into and pretty easy to find at local hobby stores or on the internet. Just make sure the education goes hand in hand with the rush.

Admit it Dad's, it sounds like fun!

Re: Gettings young kids involved in science.
I'd recommend that as soon as possible you introduce him to some books. See if you can bolster his enthusiasm. Also, really throw Mathematics at him, because if he goes to college he'll need Trig, Calc, and Algebra. Just keep his interested alive. We need more young people interested in Science.
