After trying to find test prep materials for elementary school EOG prep for my kids at learning stores and online, I started to give up because all I could find were workbooks that my kids found boring and that I discovered weren't even tailored to North Carolina's standards.  Then I found this educational kids book called Attack of the Chicken Nugget Man, a North Carolina EOG adventure.  It doesn't have multiple choice problems in it or anything, it's an actual children's fiction book that cleverly teaches math, science, social studies, and reading concepts.  My kids read half the book over the weekend and can't stop talking about it.

I'm trying to get my second grader prepared for third grade next year and he loved it, too.  The concepts weren't too hard for him (he's pretty smart) and the book actually tells parents (and former educators like me) what questions to ask our kids so we aren't just asking basic comprehension questions.  We bought an extra copy to give to my third grader's teacher.  I'm telling you, this is the way it should be done.  This book actually made me laugh from time to time and it's written on a low enough level that kids can read it on their own, but I wanted to ask them some of the questions that are printed in the book (and, yes, I actually got interested in the plot as well) so I ended up reading it with them.  We got it on Amazon by searching for EOG.

This little gem of a book has really helped me discover my kids' areas that need improvement in ALL subjects and now I know how to ask the kinds of higher-order questions that teachers are supposed to be asking their kids these days.  It has the entire NC third grade curriculum standards printed in the back of the book; I can't imagine a better resource for parents.  We couldn't find it in any local bookstore (not even the big chains), by the way.
