This is in loving memory of Aquan Lewis, the 10year old fifth graders found hanging from a coat hook in the boys bathroom at Oakton Elementary School, Chicago.

Suicides Among Young Children-Rare. In the United States, during a six year period from 1999 to 2005, there were just 10 suicides among 10-year-olds the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control reported.

De-Bunked Myth.  Contrary to popular myths, kids in lower level grades may partake in more active violence than high school students. DoSomething.Org provides facts that show middle school students are more than twice as likely as high school students to be affected by school violence.

Transition Periods.  Most school-associated violent deaths occur during transition times before and after the school day and during lunch. Further, scholarly research was undertaken within dangerous high schools of with high incidences of violence and found that violent events occurred primarily in spaces such as hallways, dining areas, and parking lots at times when teachers typically were not present.

Effective Deterrent to School Violence. The American Psychological Association indicated in 1996 that the most effective deterrent to violence was the presence of a teacher.

De-sensitization to Extreme Acts of Violence.  Most youth will have viewed 8,000 murders and 100,000 other acts of television violence by the time they are 11 years old. Additionally, in the first longitudinal study linking television to violence, the New York State Psychiatric Institute found that young teens who watch more than an hour of television a day are nearly four times more likely to commit aggressive acts in later years than those who watch less than an hour.

What Can We Do?

Actively involve the PTA in managing the hallways, cafeteria, and bathrooms before and after school and during recess and lunch.

Ask your local school to develop and present an intervention, behavioral modification plan and/or a positive behavior system. Request to see the plan and reports of implementation regularly.

Turn the television off. Limit your childs time spent playing violent video games.

Communicate regularly with your child. Ask open-ended questions about his day with keen emphasis on his mood and temperament during transition periods.

Make your presence known. Visit your childs school monthly. Drop in unannounced. See if your child is attending his regularly scheduled class, or is he skipping, walking the hallways? Is he off to himself during lunch? Does he appear to be engaged in the classroom? You can learn a lot more during a regular class day that during a Pomp and Circumstance parent and teacher conference event.

Develop a school support group. Get to know the teachers. Establish rapport. Let them know that you appreciate that they are looking after your child. Dont forget teachers, administrators, counselors and other support staff during the holidays. Present with a thank you note or card showing appreciation.

Finally, get to know the under-paid and under-appreciated security guards, custodians, engineers. Often many have a special connection with the kids and are the first to step in when something goes wrong. A little act of kindness toward your fellow man regardless of his/her position goes a long way. In so doing, you may save your childs life.

Re: School Bullying: In Loving Memory of Aquan Lewis
If anyone reading this has any contact with this child's family, please let them know that there are people out there that live far away and do not know anything about them other than this story, that are grieving for their loss and praying for their strength. My deepest condolences.

Re: School Bullying: In Loving Memory of Aquan Lewis
As an update since folks are still reading this thread:

The police investigation has concluded and more information has been released. The police have decided that this was indeed a case of suicide as found by the coroner.

There were footprints on the toilet seat consistent with the boy standing on it and then leaning against the door hook. His shirt was also buttoned all the way up to the neck. He apparently usually wore his shirts open at the neck.

He slipped out of his regular classroom, and a search was initiated as soon as his absence was noted by the teacher. Staff were searching the stairwells when he was, however, accidentally discovered by other students.

All door hooks have been removed from the school's restrooms.

Since this tragedy, there have been at least 2 more apparent copycat suicides in Illinois, of children about this age.

Re: School Bullying: In Loving Memory of Aquan Lewis

The school authorities are correct to say nothing until something is known. It doesn't mean that they are hiding some scandalous goings on. It's way too early to point fingers anywhere. Most of what the public knows about the incident comes from the janitor who administered CPR. He made a statement on the news in the heat of the activity. Since then, the entire community has closed ranks to avoid traumatizing the children in the school or the Lewis family any more than necessary.

The article in the Evanston Review has been specifically mentioned as containing falsehoods.

I don't know what really happened because the investigation continues.

One thing that does NOT make sense in the Review article is the mention of "older boys". The school is only K-5. So Aquan would have been among the oldest. If there were older boys, it could only have been in the morning before school started while middle schoolers would have been walking past the elementary school. Aquan died in the afternoon, just before school let out. Bear in mind that the cousin who mentioned these "older boys" is just 5 years old.

Let me say, that there is NOT a pervasive problem with bullying at this school. Of course there is some. Kids can be mean to each other. But this school is not known for having a particular problem with it. If it is more likely that one boy would slip away without notice than several slipping away. This school is run as a pretty tight ship.

There are lots of people trying to make sense of this tragedy with very little information. It just can't be done yet. There are over 400 children who attend this school. That's a lot of potential witnesses to interview. And they're not exactly going to be the most articulate witnesses, being small children. This is an investigation that will take time and much sensitivity.

We don't know exactly when Aquan slipped away. We don't know if he had a hall pass or snuck away. We don't know who first discovered he was missing, or gone too long, when. We don't know who thought to look in the bathroom, or if he was found by chance or by whom.

I do know that the 5th grade classrooms are a distance from the gym, involving many corners and two flights of stairs. I do know that when classes change, children usually travel in lines. This practice has not always been popular because it's seemed too restrictive when other suburban schools allow the kids to walk more casually.

Whatever happened, it was bizarre and tragic. When I first heard of the story, I thought it was probably because of boys horsing around in the boys room. There have been other children in the U.S. injured or killed by coat hooks in bathroom stalls due to jumping around in and between them. That would have been bizarre enough.

Then I thought maybe boys, or just Aquan, were trying to see if you could get down from hook and tragically discovered that you couldn't.

Any scenario seems less probable than the next. It's just completely weird. There is nothing that makes sense yet.

It does no one any service to speculate and spread rumors, even if you think you're supporting a grieving mom. I don't dare to speculate, and I'm very familiar with the school, it's personnel, practices, and many of the children. I don't see how someone outside the community could begin to guess.
