Hello,

I am a student in navasota high school this is my first year there and honestly this school needs help. most of the teachers (with a few) exceptions can't teach or just refuse to. The sad thing is there are students who want to learn but can't because they left their ID at home so they must sit in OCS (on campus suspension) all day where you sit on stool and do nothing. If a student isn't in OCS they are getting drug tested or they are doing nothing in the classroom. If their is anyone who can help a sixteen year old fix a high school please post something.

Re: student in horrid school trying to improve it
Wow, it's been awhile. alright we're still working on getting the suspension fixed its probably not gonna happen but i don't care. I say this because the human piece of trash that is my princpal decided to order a strip search of an entire class because a hundred bucks was "stolen" from a teachers desk. I will do what i can to help the victims get even ( with the help of the local media) but at the moment im still to busy to think straight or use grammar well. also my petition didn't work my school board just gave me a look that said "we dont give a flip" I shall post more (and better) when I chill out and get the time. later yall.

Re: student in horrid school trying to improve it
I'm curious what the situation is like now? I think a little over a month has passed since we last heard from you. Has anything changed?

I offer two other suggestions if the appealing to the school board has been fruitless: Write a letter to the governor. Be sure to lay it out very well and try not to point fingers. Keep emotions out of your letter and just state the facts.

The other is to write the former 1st Lady, Mrs. Bush. She was an advocate for reading and education. If you could somehow get a letter to her, she might be a great asset. After all, she is from your home state.

But as another poster said, be sure to keep up and do your best on your studies as you need to keep your credibility in check.

I'm interested to hear an update from you! :-)

Re: student in horrid school trying to improve it
sometimes in our haste to make a positive difference, we do things that may be counter-productive. please hang in there. if you are suspended, ask for a work study packet so that your grades do not suffer. it is a common stance in many school systems is to take disciplinary actions against students who refuse to participate in a statewide high stakes test. stay on track re: your school work. you might try www.google.com to set up a free account to post your petition as a 'file' then invite others to view it and make comments. please though don't let your school work suffer. you'll be better able to present your case/side when you are creditable-- this you'll learn as you become older. i'm still working on it myself ;)

Re: student in horrid school trying to improve it
Well I wrote a letter to the TEA in place of the English essay then turned in the otherwise blank test. after doing this i sat quietly until a vice Principal removed me from the room later i was suspend for the rest of the day for "refusal to take state administered exam". later i was interviewed by my local news and i have successfully got a petition together although most of my signatures were confiscated by the administration however my parents are fighting this as well as my suspension. BTW I live in navasota Texas and i got to navasota high school if anyone can help me take on this school please step forward. also i would love to post the petition I've been passing around my school how ever id don't know how.

Re: student in horrid school trying to improve it
hi kylemw13. thanks for coming back to us. many are wishing you well. go to www.teachersunionexposed.com or unionfacts.com to see if someone could offer support. in all of this, make sure you keep focused on learning. this entire process could be overwhelming and you may experience a 'backlash' from the disgruntled. perhaps if you let us know the state that you are in or the actual school you are attending, i'm sure someone from this board will step up to help you out. take care...

Re: student in horrid school trying to improve it
Well sadly the teachers who will listen don't want to get fired so they are being rather quiet in regards to the subject. So I am putting together a petition and speaking at the next school board meeting. By the way for those curious we do not have a PTA, all we have is a school board which is comprised of people stuck in the 1950's. unfortunately my only hope will be to organize 800 pacified students into some form of a TAK's boycott/ walk out/ protest. Wish me luck. Also I am more or less alone there are no adults working to improve my school, the counselor is incompetent, the super is corrupt and self serving, no teachers will step up, and the student body is borderline brainwashed.

Re: student in horrid school trying to improve it
There are some who feel the state of education in our country is a sorry state. I"m impressed with your wonderful attitude and interest to work toward improvement. The sad reality is that positive change often comes slowly - people resists change - and schools are often remarkably resistant places.
Sometimes schools with problems can create a 'track' within the school for students like you. They often call it a 'honors track' or 'college preparatory' track. Is there anything like that? If there were, it might provide you with a safe haven at school in which to learn.
The policy of having students sit all day in school doing nothing is counterproductive but it's a sadly common practice. Some will tell you that students who are forced to sit all day doing nothing will then be more likely to remember their IDs but reality suggests - it's usually the same students who forget their IDs over and over again. Detentions and similar policies really don't improve any student' s memory.

Can you find a teacher willing to listen to you at your school? Do you have other choices besides this school?

Re: student in horrid school trying to improve it
first, thanks for reaching out. here are some suggestions: (1) start a student advisory group comprised of friends interested in making a difference, (2) attend the next PTA meeting. ask the officers if you might give a presentation and serve as a student member, (3) ask to meet with the principal on a monthly basis, (4) write a one page list of ideas for possible improvement, carry this with you to your meeting with the principal and PTA, (5) discuss your ideas with your parents/legal guardians. are they in agreement? will they support you in your quest? (6) call the local newspaper and/or write a three paragraph letter to the editor asking for support and help, finally (7) find other active adults within your school who are working 12 hour days to improve the school too. you are not alone (a coach, counselor, staff member, librarian, cheer leading sponsor, etc) good luck. stay in touch. remember we are all in this together. teachers are required to do so much these days that they often feel overwhelmed and afraid to act for fear of being signaled out for doing something wrong (a no no in the adult world). once you get a little older you'll see that you'll be more reluctant to step out and take a risk.
thanks for sharing....

Re: student in horrid school trying to improve it
Praier changies things. We have to teach our children to ask GOD for what we want and trust him to give it to us. Remember . WE..as parents have the responsability of teaching and showing our children how to trust in GOD.We have to stand for GOD law.
When we do that !. GOD will set that which is wrong ,right.
