Hello!

I am a mother of two amazing kids! My daughter is 11 years old and in the 6th grade and my son is 17 years old and he will be graduating in May. They have been through a lot of transitions in the past 5 years. We have had deaths, divorce and much more. We have moved twice. The first time, my daughter was in  3rd grade and my son was in 9th grade. The move meant NEW SCHOOLS......new everything! I went to the new schools with the kids. We talked to the staff and toured the schools. I got involved and stayed involved. I work full-time...so, it isn't always easy to physically be there. But, effort is everything. If you put effort into it so will your kids and the teachers. We just moved for the second time. My son did not have to transfer schools. The move was not far and this is his senior year so he was able to get a boundary exception. My daughter on the other hand had to start all over again in yet another new school. As if middle school isn't tough enough all by itself. Anyway, she transfer to her new school about a month ago. She is doing so wonderful! She's in all Gifted and Talented classes, she's made tons of friends and she loves her teachers. I went to the new school before we even moved and I talked to the Guidance Councilor and toured the school. I asked every question I could possibly think to ask. Then, after we moved, I took my daughter to the school. We took a tour together and she was able to meet some of the staff. I have since given my email address to all of the teachers and guidance. Communication is key. Like I said, I work full-time, so email is awesome. The teachers know what my  kids  have been through. It helps when the teachers have a little insight. Teachers have so many children and so little communication with the parents. I think moving and transferring schools is as hard or as easy as you allow it to be.

Thank you, I figured it couldn't hurt to put it out there. :)

Re: Moving and Transferring Schools
Maxiesmom, unfortunately, with Greatschools being a nationwide forum, the chance of finding another family from the same town, with children of similar age who are familiar with the specific schools you're interested in, is slim.
Have you tried using the "Research and Compare" feature on the green menu bar near the top of this page, to see what other elementary schools are in the area you're moving to?
For general questions, you might like to join Greatschools Elementary School Parents Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11527

Re: Moving and Transferring Schools
Does anyone have experience with St Louis schools- The Forest Park, Clayton areas specifically. We are considering New City School or something similar. Is there a public school that uses a similar approach? Our son will be starting 1st grade.
