In the world of today -  inflation of gas, food, apt housing, school care, and much more; I have been allowing my son to use money that he has earned to pay for some items that he would like for pleasure. When he wants a hot wheel car or McDonalds; it appears that he realizes that money does not grow on trees, and these days you have to watch spending.  So he less likely to buy an item with his own money for the simple fact he doesn't want to use his own cash. It's easier said than done when the parent or someone else is paying for an item(s).

So, I try to teach my son that sometimes saving money is better than spending it on items not needed.  Save Save Save and when the time comes to buy a really big item, the value of that item is much more than buying several little items.  Whether its at school, outside of school, an event, shopping, etc....I teach him it's ok on occassion to get that hot wheel or hamburger, but it's also ok to save.  And at the same time, he learns how to spend money wisely. In every day life we are spending, so best to teach them while they are young....Think before you react to a purchase and spend money wisely!
