Whem my son and I read in order to make it more fun for him and keep him excited about reading, he'll read the book out aloud and I will try to act out all the parts for him.  He thinks it's the funniest thing and wants to keep reading to see what else I will act out.  My one year old also thinks it's the funniest thing to see me make a fool of myself.  Sometimes I have him act out the parts too.  To help him keep his writing skills up, we play a game called 5 questions.  I write him a note to see if he can find a particular object in the house by asking different questions of me.  He's only allowed to ask 5 questions and they all have to be written down on the paper.  I write the answers back on the paper.  He keeps score on how many times he's been able to figure out the object before he uses up his 5 questions.   To keep up his math skills I will write about 5 math problems on the chalkboard, that we have at home, and leave it there for him.  He has to figure out all 5 math problems and write the answers, every math problem that he gets correct he earns 5 cents, for every one he gets wrong, 1 cent is taken away.  He then keeps his money in a piggy bank and when he has $5 or so I take him to the 99 cents store so he can buy what he wants with his money.  I try to change it around every week so he doesn't get bored of the same thing every week.  Make learning fun for them not a chore, you can have fun too!
