My son Joseph is 11 and has an academic diagnosis of autism with the local school district.  He is not reading at grade level, and I cant afford professional help to address this problem.

I could have sent him to the special education summer school program with the district, but he wouldnt have received much one-on-one which is how he learns best.  So, I decided to tackle homeschooling.

My younger child is attending a Reading Academy offered by the local university, but they will not accommodate my son with autism.  So, I asked them to let me use a room on site to work with my son.  I send my daughter who doesnt have a reading problem down the hallway with the other children attending the academy while I work one-on-one with my son on a reading curriculum I borrowed from his special education teacher.  This gives me twelve hours a week of uninterrupted time to work with my son.  Ill know if I was effective at the end of the summer.

Good for you for taking the initiative :D. One thing you won't regret is trying to help your son. Not matter if you keep him homeschooled or send him to school. Keep it up and I bet you will see some difference!!!

That's great! I bet is lowers the distractions you get and puts you both in the mode of learning... I have to send my son to the tutor's house to be tutored because he finds all kinds of things to distract him around our house.

if i was only there i could help you with your problem.it is not best for children with autism to be in a large group.he needs a special therapy, and i understand how difficult it is for you to take care of him.i think our community needs more special education unit at an affordable rate, or even free to the public.we are paying taxes, how come our children, especially the special children do not get these benefits.

Its not as hard as it looks..Blessings
