To help your child keep up during the summer I would have them continue to read each night. I usually like to take off on the weekends so they have a break. Some schools send home summer packets that have math problems and 2 books to read which is great because it takes the burden off of you. This year our school sent home a password to access a computerized reading program. My 6th grader likes it because she earns points and can buy things in her virtual world. I also try and remember anything is reading it doesnt have to be a book. It can be a magazine, a recipe ect...

Research shows that the best homework for kids is Reeading -- read environmental print in the car -- McDonalds, Pepboys, street signs -- I often tell parents that this can count for their child's reading logs -- real world reading!

We are a family of readers. We tend to collect books every where we go.
We road trip every summer, the goal is to buy, a classic read, as well as something that could stimulate the mind and tickle the spirit.
Reading is a family affair at our house. My daughter actually tries to out read us. Its fun watching her mark each book from her suggested reading list. She is reading two levels beyond her actually grade. Reading is still so (fundamental) fun but yet so necessary.

Reading doesn't have to be a book- what a great point! I think learning to read recipes is a life skill that can be really fun for children to learn.
