Times are tough right now and maybe hard to find educational things that don't cost much or are free.  There are things out there though.  You just need to look for them and ask around.  For instance I have take my boy's to a local Veterinary Clinic and they gave us and a few of our friends a free tour!  The boy's got to look in a microscope at ear mites, watch a demonstration on dog training (training puppies) and also get to see how they use occupational therapy on dogs that have been hurt in one way or another.  The kids loved it and didn't even realize they were learning :D

Another free tour we had was at our local bowling alley.  The kids got to learn hot the bowling machines worked and how they fixed things when they weren't working properly.  Afterwards they even gave all the kids a free slice of pizza!!

It never hurts to ask places if they give tours and if they are free.  The kids have a lot of fun and learn all at the same time.  Best of all it's free!  Learning can take place without a lot of money and can be loads of fun for the kids.  So don't be afraid to ask.

Re: Free Learning Opportunities
I was a 4-H leader for a while and we had speakers & field trips all the time. Don't forget banks - they will give tours and some have workbooks, etc as handouts. Home Depot/Lowe's - they do a workshop every month for free plus you can usually have planned events for your group including a quick lesson on tool safety.

If you have a group of friends & a place you can coordinate speakers to come to you and talk to kids on all sorts of topics; pet care, sewing, cooking, etc. I was able to set this us at Hancock Fabrics for a while, a friend used the bowling alley, another used the local library.

LOL yeah it was exciting to see how it all works!! My boy's loved it as well. We've done a lot of free or not too expensive things this year because of gas prices and all. It's been a lot of fun though.

Jsillymom,

Speaking as the youth coordinator for a bowling center, I can safely say there are regular requests from scouting troups to visit the back and see what goes on there. Even in our leagues we let the kids go in the back to see and the most excited people are usually the parents :)
