My daughter goes to Sylvan.  I've experienced their capability 1st hand, and in spite of the difficulties my daughter has with learning, Sylvan has done very well with her.  She has learned so much that her school scores are much higher and she is now an avid reader (before she couldn't read Dick and Jane without a struggle).  It's the method of teaching that works for my child - it's more of an individual and approach than at school and Sylvan works for mastery of the subjects.

Also, my mother was a foster parent for 2 girls from the Apache reservation.  One had a learning disability, the other had behavioral disorders.

They both were failing in our local public schools having come from the reservation in Northern Arizona which had very poor schools at the time.  Both of the foster children went to Sylvan and they both had huge educational success.  The one with some learning disabilities, dyslexia and comprehension problems, thrived at Sylvan and has gone on to graduate from college which was not a possibility before Sylvan.  The behavior issues with the other girl lessened because her confidence had grown - there were still some behavior issues to contend with, but not nearly as much nor as severe.

I think with behavior, as in my foster-sister and my own daughter - some behavior problems are developmental/neurological and some are because of the struggle they face in the classroom and are therefore more environmentally caused.

With both my foster-sister and my daughter, they had compounded behavior issues because of both a developmental behavior issue coupled with their struggles in the classroom (and my daughter also struggles with learning because of comprehension and memory issues).  When Sylvan stepped in and began teaching these girls they both had less of a struggle and more self-confidence and their grades rose.

Besides having experience on a personal level with Sylvan with 3 children, I've known many, many parents who've had nothing short of amazing results.  As a matter of fact, of all the people I've personally known who've had their own children at Sylvan, not a single one was even remotely dissatisfied and several have said they'd have paid double for what they got because their children's self-esteem, growth & education was well worth it.

My daughter has grown educationally and emotionally by leaps and bounds since going to Sylvan.  My daughter has excelled by THREE grade levels in reading in just 124 hours of work with them.  Her reading is now complete and she's above her grade level - she started out 3 grades behind!!!

We're still working on math and will be throughout the summer but in just the short amount of time she's been working on math, she's already gone up TWO grade levels and in math she was 4 grade levels behind.  We have more time left on our plan thru the summer than we've had to date with her math, so I can only imagine that she'll be ahead of her grade come fall.

I'm very pleased with Sylvan and their ability to teach my daughter who is not self-motivated, who has attention issues, and who has a difficult time comprehending things (both written and spoken).

The cat's out of the bag now I guess.  My daughter has both behavior and learning disorders and she's THRIVING at Sylvan.

There are always going to be differences of opinion about Sylvan and other tutoring establishments.  However, I make no blanket statements about whether or not Sylvan is good for all or not and I'm not making a blanket statement that all children with disabilities will do well.  I'm just making a statement of my personal experiences with them which have been utterly fantastic.

I'm happy to have my daughter at Sylvan, and she's happy going there and she's become a happier child in general since going there - because now she knows she's capable and smart.  She has faith in herself and she's struggling less and less in school with each visit to Sylvan.

Re: My Experience with Tutoring
Hi Aj,
My name is Eileen and I am the PR director for a unique tutoring center in Longwood Florida called the Knowledge Laboratory. It is great to hear that your son received the help he needed from tutoring. I was wondering if you could give me some information about your tutoring experiences around Apollo? I was home schooled for 5 years when I was younger, so alternate learning is something I am most interested in. The Knowledge Lab specializes in comfortable, creative, but structured learning, and I am eager to learn as much as possible about alternate teaching techniques. Thanks!

Re: My Experience with Tutoring
Hi Dr Johnson, you're right my son is not learning disabled. I think it was the individual attention he received at Huntington and the time they took with him to master each skill before moving on. It's like I can see a little light shine over his head when he gets it and he loves the place, he's always asking if he can go back. If for some reason I find him struggling again, I will find the money to enroll him in the Huntington program again. Needless to say I was very happy with Huntington. I was told by the Center Director that this Fast track to success program was a special program designed to make tutoring affordable to parents in my area who did not qualify for the No Child Left Behind program but wanted to get the help for their children anyway (and it was). Huntington worked with me, they had payment plans that suit my pockets and I was very pleased with the results. The program was easy to schedule, affordable and I could see the improvements in my child. My friends are signing their kids up for the next session.

Re: My Experience with Tutoring
I'm glad to hear of your experience. I wonder why you chose this time to post your experiences.

Friends of ours send their kids to Huntington. But truth be told, these kids aren't learning disabled, but foreign adoptees as older kids. Their learning problems have more to do with subtle language and background knowledge.

We had partial success at Kumon. They helped a lot with automaticity on math facts for my LD twins. Their addition and subtraction facts were finally pretty solid. They eventually stalled midway in multiplication however and refused to keep going.

I also had them doing the reading program, but I don't believe it did much other than force them to do a bit more reading outside of class. They are progressing much better now that they are using the Wilson method.

Another method that we've tried was Phonographics. This was a very systematic one-on-one phonics program, but lacked the sensory aspect of Orton-Gillingham based systems. It was something like Hooked on Phonics.

We also bought the books on the Davis method, which has to do with visualizing. No luck with that either.

And we spent almost 2 years at a local teacher's college reading clinic. Their methods were very similar to those in use at the school district. (word walls etc) But even with intensive one-on-one instruction 2X per week, there was not appreciable progress.

Thes chain centers take a lot of heat from the LD community because they really aren't designed for disabled kids. I suspect that the individual practitioner and how the methods mesh with the particular quirks of a given child, have a lot to do with success.

I agree 100% that the constant discouragement of school failure breeds behavior problems. I can't figure out why schools continue to punish kids for doing poorly academically instead of offering more support & encouragement. The pain for some of these kids truly unbearable.

Re: My Experience with Tutoring
Hi, I'm new at this but I had to tell you this story.
I'm a father of a third grader and I work very long hours. I noticed my child struggling with his reading while at home and when he's doing homework. l called the school and made a few visits to speak with his teacher but my child was still having trouble grasping the work in school. As an attempt to help my child, I took it upon myself to enroll him in Huntington Learning Center in Apollo Beach Fl for their 12 week program called Fast Track to Success. After a few weeks, I noticed a significant improvement in my child's reading skills and study habits. It's as if he feels more confident in himself and motivated to do his homework and show me he can do it. His mother tells me that the school has called her and was shocked by his change in attitude and improvement in grades. I'm happy, his mom is happy and things are better for us. So I highly recommend Huntington Learning Center in Apollo Beach Fl.
