First thing I always do when my child is having a difficult time is go and spend a morning in the classroom.  Bright - advanced children usually have trouble in 1st grade because they already know the matterial being taught and catch on quickly to new material.  1st grade is can be very slow paced and the kids are probably bored.  The teacher doesn't and won't recognize this because she is busy teaching and the slower children could be holding up the class.  I must say when I went in and observed it was boring to me. I had know idea how my child was holding it together for as long as he did.  Observe first then form a judgement call on your child's behavior.

Re: Visit Classroom
This is great advice. This seems like it would work well for a variety of issues that might arise in the classroom. First hand observation is the best way to form an opinion of what is really going on and figure out how you might solve the problem.

Re: Visit Classroom
Great observation. You really can learn a lot just by being in the classroom. Better yet, while you are there, why not volunteer to help struggling readers or be a volunteer aide in the classroom. These activities will give you an inside view and you will be less of an outsider if you are there helping out.
