Something I came across while researching how to improve this community board.

If you are moving and want to know what is going on in the education system, something you might want to try is tapping into the local news online (whichever city or state you are moving to). .I was checking out the updates on Denver Colorado's Education System (see below) and realized that not everyone knows to go to the local news for information on that city or state's Education Plan and "what's happening" lately.

DENVER - The Denver Public School Board voted to close one charter school on Thursday and put six others on probation.

The board voted to close the Denver Arts and Technology academy.

They chose not to give the same fate to Challenges, Choices and Images (CCI), which had also been mentioned for a possible closure.

Both schools serve just over 1,000 students.

CCI and two other charter schools were placed on strict probation: Life Skills Center of Denver and Skyland Community High School.

Several board members say they are frustrated with the ongoing problems at the schools.

Those problems included unsatisfactory student achievement and no signs of notable improvement. Board members say the schools have chronically underperformed, with CSAP scores below the district average in most subjects.

However, those three schools still had their charters renewed, but on a probationary basis.

Seven other schools also had their charters renewed.

This is a good way to find out! Many news stations have online access, so just click "Education". I find it very informative and factual.

Another idea is to set up a news alert with Google
www.google.com/alerts?hl=en&t=1
You can type in your school name, school district, etc as key words and Google will email you any news stories picked up from hundreds of online news outlets.

You can also check the parent reviews of schools on our Web site. Go to any school profile on GreatSchools and you'll see parent reviews and parent ratings. Of course, just like any "news" you need to be a discerning reader!

Thank for your advice, and you're right, we should all be careful. No one knew Columbine (a good public neighboring school) was going to be the one to stun the State into awareness.

However, my only intention to this post was to add more resources to finding out facts about schools in a particular area. Bias or not, the news does talk about important issues and it is up to the parents to decide how they want to absorb the information, or not. School Closures, Education Plans, the Budget and yes, even shootings and inappropriate behavior of teachers. It's not to say I would or wouldn't enroll my children into a particular school JUST BECAUSE of the news provided me because then I would be bias.

If the news said "such and such student was abducted this week, there are 10 sexual preditors in that area" would you move there and enroll your child there? I think there are many smart parents out there that will decide where to move to and which school to enroll their child in. Parent reviews? You're right, we need more of them, but what do you think parents are doing on the news with their child that is being taped beaten to a bloody pulp because the school didn't doing anything about a particular bullying situation? In my opinion, that is considered a review about the school and I wouldn't have known about it unless I was watching the news, or reading the paper. Tells me that school is probably not the kind of school I want my child going to because they didn't listen to his cry for help (facts and proof were shown and mentioned). This is just something to add to MANY resources when researching areas to move to, thank you for bringing up your point.
